Alex Pardee: Hiding From The Normals
Nov 5, 2009
In October I had the pleasure of attending the opening of Alex Pardee's Hiding From The Normals. Alex's style is very original-- reminiscing of a warped fairy tale world filled with unimaginable creatures with grotesque features. When I entered Gallery 1988 for this, I felt as if I was stepping into another world.
The time, thought, overall details, and out-of-the-box ways that Alex Pardee displayed his art work, was very refreshing. It wasn't just a piece of art, he actually made this art have it's own life by displaying key features and evidence of their existence on the walls.
Some throwback, homemade masks was a nice touch to go with this Halloween-y event.
Alex was mobbed by his people. His costume was brilliantly put together. Alex was Stephen King's moss man role from the classic Tales From The Crypt movie.
I met a bunch of solid Johnny Cupcakers. Jose and Elias along with their lovely girlfriends.
Long time pal Peekaboo was hanging out. We did a collaboration a couple years back. Who knows, perhaps we'll work again soon. Check out some of his awesome work online. He's always got some stuff in the works. Peekaboo also just opened an art gallery in Echo Park California, called The Ronin Gallery.
Peekaboo was dog sitting that night. Look at this amazing little creation! I've never seen anything like this dog in my life!
QUADE!!!
CARL!!!
Next door at Golden Apple Comics they were projecting the horror movie, Trick-R-Treat, on the back of their building. Inside picked up the newly released dvd and met writer + director, Michael Dougherty. That was a neat little surprise.
Back to Gallery 1988 where owner Jensen was holding down Alex Pardee's jam-packed show. Jensen, an amazing dude, has created a wonderful place where anyone who grew up in, or has an appreciation for the 1980's (and just about anything rad + original) would go berserk. Jensen has a lot of shows that revolve around certain themes, video games and/or movies from the 80's. It ends up being a plethora of unique, nostalgic submissions/treasures by all sorts of artists. However, every now and then he'll have other shows, such as Alex's.
Thanks for the great time everyone-- I can't wait to come back!
