CSU Thank You's.

Dec 8, 2008

I got a whole bunch of kind e-mails + messages after my lecture at Colorado State University. I thought I'd post a couple. Thank YOU guys for trudging through the snow (and some across states) to listen to my lecture / keynote presentation.

...and to answer your question about trading my brand for that perfect someone -- I would simply find a balance that would allow me to have both things. It's almost impossible when you're still trying to start a brand or grow a brand immensely, because you will indeed end up half-assing both your brand and your relationship (and work or school too). However, when you grow enough, delegate tasks to the right people/team members AND find that special someone who is supportive + understanding, then you've found that balance.

I dream about that balance every so often.

Neat bathrooms.

Dec 6, 2008

Who would of thought going to the bathroom could be this fun? Bright fun colors and simple iconic imagery make these JFK airport bathrooms very welcoming. However, a creepy, small, bearded kid taking pictures of the public bathrooms may not be so welcoming. I realized this halfway through my photo-taking. Oh well..

Colorado trip.

Dec 6, 2008

Walking through busy Logan airport on my way to my respective terminal to Colorado. As I sat down with my jacket unzipped and my hood up, this random kid caught a glimpse of my JC shirt and said "Nice shirt man -- Check it out..." He then pulled up his sleeve and showed me his Johnny Cupcakes tattoo on his forearm. He didn't know I was me until I took my took my hood off after he showed me his arm. I thought it was pretty funny... and random that out of all the people in the airport I sat next to this random kid happened to have a JC tattoo.

When I landed in Denver, I had to go pee pee so I found the bathroom. It was kind of scary that they have these tornado signs everywhere.

I think this is where all of the bad kids go.

I made it out to Fort Collins. Huge campus with freezing weather.

One of my great friends from  middle school / high school moved to Colorado and now goes to school out here. When we were younger we were going through a phase where we wanted to get super healthy before school, by walking all the way to school. The kicker was, we usually ate a massive bagel right after or during out walk. Either way, it was fun. There was a student who was at the airport waiting for the Shamrock Shuttle with me, and we were talking about CSU and what not. She told me she was going to be a vet, and I asked if she knew my friend Colby. Turns out she did! She asked me if she was short and had A LOT of brown hair. Haha... all I could think of is how Colby finds a hair in her food at almost EVERY restaurant she eats at, but it's usually/always is her own hair. Speaking of eating, I met up with Colby and her boyfriend for some big sandwiches and hot chocolate. Thanks for hanging out guys! Made me feel at home. Throughout the day it was snowing and as cold as it was, I thought it was beautiful outside. I really hope we have a white Christmas in Boston.

Even with all of the snow, a couple hundred students filled up the lecture hall. Jesse and his ASAP crew did a great job putting everything together. Thanks man!

This guy made it out to get a poster signed for his girl for Christmas. Hmmm maybe I shouldn't of posted this in case it was a surprise?

These were some of the many vintage Johnny Cupcake shirts. The couple years old, original brown teeth shirt! The purple picnic gingham! And the out of print / limited Jokester shirt.

These two don't go to school here and snuck in for the lecture. Well, it was open to the public - so I guess they didn't sneak in. But I thought it was cool that they came down and hung out.

And my new friend, Ha. This die hard, 26 year old, intelligent, Vietnamese designer who lives in Texas -- flew all the way up to Colorado for my lecture. Down to earth, funny dude. I invited him to hang out with everyone and myself afterwards. Click here to check out some of Ha's amazing design work.

The next day I almost missed my flight due to the massive amounts of un-plowed snow there was. The airport was about an hour away already, but with the snow and overly cautious drivers, it took way longer. Plus I was on the 'Shamrock Shuttle' which magically + safely made its way to the airport okay.

When I arrived at the airport I witnessed a few dozen transformer-like snow plows clearing up the ground.

I met a ton of other great people and have a bazillion photos, but it's too much to post about. If I have any photos with you or of you, shoot me an e-mail and I'll try my best to send you them. It was great meeting everyone again, and thank you for coming out to the lecture! Oh yeah, I met this kid too who has been hustling doing his thing. He gave me a demo cd and I didn't really know what to expect, but it was great. Especially for an 18 year old! Click here to check out Black Prez.

I've been invited to guest lecture at Colorado State University this Wednesday. I've packed my suitcase with tube socks, long johns, Johnny Cupcakes gloves and my Canadian Goose jacket. I guess they got a few feet of snow as of recent, which will be nice little holiday spirit boost. If you or anyone you know goes to CSU, spread the word!

Punch Out: Wii

Nov 23, 2008

I couldn't believe my ears when I heard about the rumor of this release. Growing up as a child, this was the cream of the crop Nintendo game. I remember meeting up with friends on Friday night and taking turns trying to get to, and beat, Mike Tyson. The fact that this is being released on Wii, brings a whole new spectrum of pulled muscles, smashed light bulbs, and bloody knuckles. I am anticipating bringing back those Friday night Punch Out marathons, once this game is released. The legendary Glass Joe and King Hippo even make an appearance! --- Please be patient while the preview loads...

Boston College lecture.

Nov 22, 2008

After attending the State House celebration, it was time to head over to Boston College for my lecture.

When I pulled into campus, I was on the phone getting directions from the event coordinator. I told him that I was near the building that looked like an old fashioned church. Then I looked to my left and right, and I was surrounded by buildings that all looked the same. To my surprise, the entire campus was like this. It was awesome though, I felt like I was in another country... or better yet, back in time. Before getting too lost - my good friend Alex met up with us and jumped in the cupcake mobile. He directed me to the correct hall where I was lecturing at. And there it is! Another awesome, old fashioned church building...

It was very dark and quiet outside. 10 pm was approaching on a Thursday night, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. As I pushed opened the cold, heavy doors with uncertainty, I heard lots of voices...

...I was very happy to see these college kids filling the hallways before the lecture started. Apparently they were there for nearly 2 hours beforehand, in hopes of getting some goods seats... or should I say seats in general...

I saw some familiar faces too. Brett and his crew were there! Brett alerted me about this store that was selling fake Johnny Cupcakes baseball t-shirts. My mom and I went to said store to get to the bottom of it. We found out some information and I've actually met a few other leads to the people who were making these. Poor print quality, bad t-shirt bodies, NO Johnny Cupcake tags or embellishments. And it makes no sense at all for a random person to want to by a baseball shirt with a cupcake on it from anywhere but my shop which is set up like a bakery. I will find them. Anyways, Brett and his friends are good people and have been supporting my brand for some time now. (unfortunately I didn't get a chance to get some photos of them.) Brett sings songs too.

LLBEAN! Seeing this backpack brought me right back to my childhood. I never owned one of these, but I always thought it was a neat concept when I was younger.

Hello everybody. Thanks a ton for coming out and taking a break from the normal college activities that usually take place on thirsty Thursdays. The entire lecture hall ended up getting so full that many people had to sit on the stairs, on the ground, etc.. You couldn't even see any bit of the ground in the entire room because of it's consumption by all of the curious students and customers. I know a lot of you had numb bum bums when my keynote presentation / lecture was finished, thank you for sitting through it. I spoke for over 2 hours and this room stayed completely full.

After the lecture was over, I hung out for a while, signed posters, t-shirts, and talked with some students about their business ideas and what not.

Some students even came equipped with scooters to get around campus on. How funny would it be if Heely's made business-esq dress shoes for professionals to zoom around the office in?

This kid reminded me of the famous Tay Zonday who wrote and performed that Chocolate Rain song. It's a compliment! That dude is known world wide!

I spotted some more customers who ventured onto campus. Lisa not only ventured onto the Boston College campus, but she also traveled across country for the grand opening of the Johnny Cupcakes Los Angeles shop. I think my favorite thing about Lisa, is that every time I see her, she is wearing comfy pants. Sweatpants, pajamas, flannels... she manages to dress well AND pull off the many lounge pants. It's difficult for guys to do it because ummm.. yep.

Alex and his crew were responsible for making all of this possible. Thanks again guys!

The 3 Musketeers! Some of my hometown buddies hung out and helped a bunch too. Micah, Alex and Lucas. I'm going to take them out for a great meal when I get home. Thank you guys!

I ended up leaving after 1:00 or 2:00 am to drive back home, which is an hour away. I went to bed super late, woke up and packed for my weekend trip to Philly. I would like to speak at a bunch of schools every month forever. I'm working on sorting out west coast dates for this winter.

Have your school or special committee / organization contact;  PR@johnnycupcakes.com

I received many positive e-mails from all of the students who attended. This one humorous e-mail stuck out, who was from one of the stray people that ventured out to the lecture;

State House celebration.

Nov 22, 2008

Before my lecture at Boston College, I was attending a ceremony / celebration at the Massachusetts State House. Before doing so, I had to find a parking spot. The State House is located by an enormous park in which you have to spend 20 minutes driving around every time you miss out on finding a parking spot. This happened to me more than a handful of times. I almost lucked out when I found the parking garage, but I remembered that I had a super tall van that would not fit inside. After much time wasted circling around the park and it's dense traffic, and taken parking spots - I finally found one!

A few minutes of face freezing, I ran up the street to the State House. How do I get in though? There's a bunch of entrances, but they are all locked!

Should I jump the fence? Climb a tree? Am I going to get shot by security? Alas - an opened entrance has been found!

Just when I couldn't be any more late, I had to remove thirteen lbs of pack-rat rubbish + coins from my pockets.

What were those directions the security man gave my friend and I? Was it the 3rd hall or 30th hall? 5th elevator or 15th elevator? There was nobody to ask, we were lost in The State House and I felt like I was in The Shining.

Ooo look at all these neat little tiles...ok ok, I have to hurry, I'll look at these cool tiles later.

Finally! Phew. Hello everyone. I met a bunch of great people. There was a handful of other Massachusetts hustlers who were finalists in BusinessWeeks 'Americas Best Young Entrepreneurs'.

I love jazz trios. I wish I knew how to play a real instrument.

I met this cute couple at the event. Brendan and Elizabeth. Brendan started a neat company called Ten Minute Media, which has been going great. And Elizabeth is going to be opening a Houdini Museum! How dope is that?!! I used to be a magician and I did magic shows at kids birthday parties when I like 11 years old. I still dabble though. I love magic. Oh yeah -- doesn't Elizabeth sorta look like the actress from the My Girl movie from back in the day?

They presented a couple of awards to me.  The 'Citizens of Commonwealth of Massachusetts Award for Entrepreneurial Excellence' and the 'Massachusetts House of Representatives Award' for the success of my brand and for being named 'America's Best Young Entrepreneur' of 2008. Thank you everyone and thank you Massachusetts!

Now it's time to spread this knowledge + entrepreneurial experiences. I had a lecture at Boston College that I had to bolt to.

TO THE CUPCAKE MOBILE!

"Johnny Cupcakes Presents..."

Nov 19, 2008

"So Johnny, what's next?" Is a common question that I'm asked. I have years and years worth of surprises that you'd never guess. Usually I try to keep them locked up in the back of my noggin... However -- every now and then I'll let my customers in on tid bits of secrets at my releases. OR I will let my customers in on something soon before said 'something' begins.

I'm all about building memories and experiences. I live for this sorta stuff! So are you ready to hear about one of my many new projects? Huh? Well...

As far as I can remember, I've always wanted to show my favorite childhood movies on the big screen. All of these movies have molded me into the wacky person I am today. Movies such as Goonies, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Ninja Turtles, Ghostbusters, Home Alone, Terminator 2, Beetlejuice, 3 Ninjas, Friday The 13th, Back To The Future, and the list goes on + on...

Since I pride my brand off of my independent, DIY, homegrown morals + work ethics, I thought I would team up with a like minded movie theater in Boston -- The Coolidge Corner Theater. After meeting with them and talking about my many ideas, plans, and antics - we've decided we're a perfect fit for each other!

Once a month I will be presenting one of my favorite films from my childhood. Not only will it be a fun, memorable, older movie - but there will be trivia, raffles, games, contests, prizes, and even some limited edition Johnny Cupcakes movie themed t-shirts. Some of which you can only purchase at the theater during my once a month events. Every showing will be different from the next.

Just about all of these movies will be shown with the original film reels!

In addition to the varied tea, candy, ice cream, and many other great non-traditional snacks - this movie theater has some of the best popcorn I've ever had in my life.

These are going to be some unforgettable events! When + what is the first one you may ask? Well, well - you will have to stay tuned. I hope you're just as excited as I am!

Did I mention my dad used to take my mom to this very same theater, before I was born? He even took her to a midnight showing of Mad Max! Who would of thought that I'd be presenting movies at the very same theater they used to go on dates to? And who knows, maybe if it wasn't for this theater, I wouldn't of been conceived!
