The classic Johnny Cupcakes Marilyn Monroe design you see featured in the photo above has more meaning than one would think. That design is one of the most talked about pieces in the history of the brand and there isn’t a week that goes by without someone requesting that we reprint it. There were many factors that made it the legendary item it now is. Largely its due to Ms. Monroe having one of the most recognizable faces in the history of the world, but replacing her infamous beauty mark with our logo instantly made it our most clever piece to date and people ate it up.
As the company grew we eventually found ourselves working with a company that we never thought would be possible. That company would be Warner Brothers, which lead to our very first major collaboration: Looney Tunes.
Working with Warner Brothers not only opened other doors for us, but it taught us a lot about what could be achieved when fully collaborating with a well-established and international company. Fast forward to today and we’ve found ourselves having now worked with Sanrio and Nickelodeon too. So here are all these characters and stories that I had grown up admiring and which helped shape my interests and personality, and my company was given the keys to their giant animated castles. Even just a few years ago none of this was a blip on our radar or an inkling of a thought in my head and now we have earned the respect and admiration of these amazing brands/properties and the people that run them.
When we decided to finally revisit the Marilyn Monroe design, lots of questions and ideas were kicked around. Do we rework the original design? Do we parody Warhol? Do we use a photograph or an illustration? It started to weigh on our brains and we decided to reach out to the Marilyn Monroe Estate to see if they’d be interested in working with us to revisit this important part of our brand’s history.
They graciously agreed to work with us and were just as excited by the prospect to do something a little different with Hollywood’s favorite starlet. The completion of this project really brings the Johnny Cupcakes story full circle as we continue to do our best to remain contemporary and clever. The original design would look amateur by our brands’ standards today and even the new design hasn’t been run too heavily through the design machine, but it’s the idea and the intent of the concept which makes it resonate with people to this day.
We’re already seeing Marilyn flying off of our shelves and we have to thank all of you for continuing to allow us to do the thing we do. Without your adoration and support we’d be nothing and we can’t wait to reveal future collaborations we have in the works. Some small, some big, some that were still off our radar even with our current résumé and clout. Hopefully they are off your radar too and we continue to surprise you in the future!
