Chris Lippincott, director
of media relations for the Texas Department of Transportation,
confirmed that a portable traffic sign at Lamar Boulevard and West 15th
Street, near the University of Texas at Austin, was hacked into during
the early hours of Jan. 19.
“It was clever,
kind of cute, but not what it was intended for,” said Lippincott, who
saw the sign during his morning commute. “Those signs are deployed for
a reason — to improve traffic conditions, let folks know there’s a road
closure.”
“It’s sort of amusing, but not at all helpful,” he told FOXNews.com
Imagine seeing this sign on your way home from seeing a zombie movie at the theaters? Followed by people dressed as zombies, chasing you. Hmmm… ideas ideas…
I had the pleasure of presenting one of my favorite films / having a neat little event with The Coolidge Corner Theatre this past Saturday night.
Selling out the Theatre with online ticket sales, we decided to move it to an even bigger room. People drove from Connecticut, New York and all over Massachusetts to make it out – and we didn’t want to have to turn anyone away. Especially because it started at midnight and was extremely cold out… in the single digits.
The line kept growing with hundreds + hundreds of people. Since we switched theaters to accommodate everyone, the movie had to start a little bit later. So, to keep everyone warm (and alive) – we let in as many people as we could, to fill up one of the other screening rooms… and then made the switch at the appropriate time.
This lucky fella who happened to be first in line, got number one! I had two exclusive t-shirts available at the movie. One was a dark, navy blue and was number up to 60. Each t-shirt had a different number to guarantee authenticity. This limited navy one sold out real quick. I also have a black one that will be available soon in-stores and online.
Cozy + warm, the theatre began to fill up with anxious Johnny Cupcakes customers + late night movie-goers.
We raffled off a whole bunch of stuff. The big item was the Johnny Cupcakes snow tube, which should be available any day now… we’re just waiting on that big shipment.
I apologize about the freezing weather. I’m assuming that it wont be that cold during the rest of the year during the Johnny Cupcakes Presents events. Thank you everyone who helped make this possible! And thanks to everyone who came out. In addition to my friends, customers, employees, sister + neighbor – my mom even took a nap so she could rest up + make it out to the movie. It was a huge success, and will only get better (weather-wise, raffles, movies, silly commercials, giveaways, exclusives, etc..)
This March, Johnny Cupcakes Presents: Karate Kid at the Coolidge Corner Theatre. Stay tuned for more info..
A strange package arrived at my home the other day. It came in a spooky looking box.
All wrapped up in cloth, accompanied with a postcard – I found this pair of Nikes. Apparently there were only 100-1,000 pairs of these made, worldwide. Only 100 with the oversized buttons like mine. Coraline, a horror novel, by the British author Neil Gaiman – will soon be made into an animated stop-motion horror fantasy film, scheduled to be released in theaters on February 6, 2009. He teamed up with Tim Burton to bring this interesting story to life. I guess you can’t purchase these shoes anywhere, they have to either be given to you or you can win them by watching the movie.
Look at these details though! Nifty buttons, homemade-esq stitching, neat fabric and other hidden gems.
You can’t see it here, but the soles even glow in the dark!
Be sure to go see Coraline on Feb 6th for your chance to win a free pair of these crafty, limited, collectible dunks. Thanks Rob and Wieden+Kennedy!
Boston Latin School is the oldest public school in America with a continuous existence. It was founded April 23, 1635 by the Town of Boston. You even have to take a test to get into this high school…
Look at these neat lockers! I didn’t have lockers at the high school / Charter School I went to. My school was in an old hotel + aquarium – but it had a roof over our heads! Although I did have a locker when I was in public schools for a little bit. I even fit inside of mine!
So I was asked to speak at Boston Latin School, after school hours. I was a little hesitant because I didn’t know how many students would actually stay after school to listen to someone lecture. To my surprise (and the school’s surprise) the entire hallway was an enormous, clustered line filled with hundreds of students waiting to get into the room I was speaking in. There were so many people that we had to move to the gigantic auditorium.
I shared my story, knowledge, ideas, do’s, don’ts and a whole bunch of other stuff. Thank you everyone who set this up, who attended, and who helped me out. It was a very fun + successful event!

A few days ago I donated my time to guest lecture for the NFTE National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship. They provide entrepreneurship education programs to young people from low-income communities. Some with learning disabilities too. In addition to giving my lecture / presentation, I told them that I too attended a Charter School because I had a difficult time learning and sitting still.
Hundreds selected inner city high school students rolled up in buses, at Babson University. Before I began, one of the teachers had a hard time getting everyone to quiet. I’m not usually nervous and I’m used to speaking in front of hundreds/thousands of college students, but this was my first time speaking in front of high school students – some of which can’t sit still, like me! It amazed me how attentive everyone was. You could hear the drop of a pin. And it was like this for the hour and a half – 2 hours that I spoke.
I met a lot of great students, teachers, and fellow guest speakers. The feeling you get when you inspire someone is a great thing. Especially when it’s people who don’t have much motivation / ideas on what they want in this confusing thing we call life.
*In addition to speaking at universities + colleges, I would love to start speaking at more high schools too. If your school is interested, have them e-mail PR@johnnycupcakes.com
I hung out with a bunch of friends last night. Ping-pong, skeeball + pinball was had until 3 in the morning. In the middle of all of it, we took a small break and I treated them to dinner at one of my favorite restaurants. We had something new. It was wild boar meatballs and spaghetti. Reminiscing about adventures we had when we first started touring together. Other stuff was talked about too.. hahaha… I thought my face was going to fall off and pee pee was going to shoot down my legs from laughing so hard.
Later that night I went to sleep watching the giant, fluffy snowflakes fall. It was very peaceful. I then woke up to this.
I’ve been in for most of the day catching up on work, brainstorming, drawing, planning, eating clementines, and trying my best to get back to e-mails. I think I know what I might do tonight though…
I think I know where the inspiration for the product came from. Below is a photo of my dad and I when I was one years old. He built this dope little snow ramp/hill in the back yard and would push me down at full speed.
